Anxiety and the Struggle Switch

June 6, 2018 Christa Surerus

We all experience some level of anxiety in our lives. It’s unavoidable. It's not a question of whether or not we’ll experience it, but but how we approach it when it does happen.

Resisting, avoiding or attempts to fight with anxiety makes symptoms worse.
Emotions related to the anxiety are amplified through our attempts to make it go away.  A vicious cycle begins, which ties in guilt and shame about the anxiety, anxiety about the anxiety, anger, and/or sadness about the anxiety.

How to lessen the Impact and Influence of Anxiety
When something triggers anxiety, acknowledge its presence.  Notice it’s effect on your body and let it float freely through you.  Breathe. Be aware of it without making it your focus.  Continue to follow your chosen priorities, such as completing projects, taking care of yourself, spending quality time with family and friends. When you don’t struggle with it, anxiety is free to come and go without controlling your behavior.

Help is available
If you are not sure how to get started in coping with your anxiety, it may be helpful to consult with a mental health professional.
